DELAWARE – November 25, 2024 – Acker’s highly anticipated November U.S. auction, “The Birthday Auction,” took place on Thursday and Friday, November 21-22, achieving $15 million in sales across more than two thousand lots over two action-packed days. The sale marked the culmination of a week-long series of events in New York City celebrating Chairman John Kapon’s 53rd birthday. Buyers built on the strong market momentum this fall, with standout results from A Legendary Offering from an Iconic New York Collector, which achieved over $6.5 million amid intense demand for rare and mature wines. Exclusive barrels of Bordeaux and Burgundy added to the excitement, attracting spirited bidding from collectors.

Domaine de la Romanee Conti ushered in the Top Ten Lots with a tie for the number one spot. Twelve bottles of 1999 Romanee Conti and five magnums of the same vintage in OWC each achieved $250,000. Securing the second spot was a full barrel of 2023 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, which sold for $162,500. DRC claimed third place with six magnums of 1999 La Tache fetching $137,500, while Roumier took fourth with four magnums of 1988 Bonnes Mares Vieilles Vignes realizing $106,250. The fifth position also went to DRC, six bottles of 2001 Romanee Conti and three magnums of 2009, both in OWC, each commanding $100,000. Rounding out the top ten was a three-way tie featuring both White and Red Burgundy: a barrel of 2023 Roulot Meursault A Mon Plaisir Clos du Haut Tesson, a barrel of 2023 Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux, and three magnums of 2001 DRC Romanee Conti, each achieving $93,750. Notably, aside from the barrels, the Top Ten Lots were almost exclusively from A Legendary Offering from an Iconic New York Collector, with the six bottles of 2001 DRC Romanee Conti being the only exception.

The auction underscored the enduring appeal of mature wines, with Burgundy and Bordeaux from the 1980s and earlier achieving extraordinary results. Many Burgundy standouts set New World Records. Highlights included magnums of 1969 ($40,000) and 1985 ($30,000) Dujac Bonnes Mares, a magnum of 1980 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes ($16,250), and two bottles of 1978 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Perrieres ($12,500). DRC captivated collectors, with numerous lots securing New World Records, including single bottles of 1940 Romanee Conti ($15,000), 1966 La Tache ($8,750), and Grands Echezeaux from 1959 and 1971 ($8,750 & $9,375), as well as a magnum of 1959 DRC Richebourg ($27,500). Rousseau also flourished with many All-Time Highs featuring one bottle of 1948, and three bottles of 1980 Chambertin ($10,000 & $21,250), plus a magnum of 1966 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques ($13,750).

Bordeaux icons soared past estimates, with three bottles of 1961 Chateau Latour a Pomerol realizing $40,000, and two bottles of 1961 Petrus achieving $25,000. Other Bordeaux highlights capturing New World Records included a bottle of 1961 Lafleur ($17,500), magnums of 1937 Latour, 1945 Lafite, and 1953 Cheval Blanc ($8,125, $12,500 & $10,000), and bottles of 1934 Cheval Blanc and Mouton ($3,500 & $3,000). Champagne saw older vintages sparkle with magnums of 1961, 1962, and 1964 Krug Private Cuvee setting New World Records ($7,500, $6,875 & $6,000), alongside three bottles of 1952 and three magnums of 1971 Salon Le Mesnil ($10,000 & $27,500). Rhone and Italy made their presence felt, two bottles of 1970 Chave Hermitage ($4,750) and thirteen liter bottles of 1961 and 1971 Conterno Monfortino ($21,250 & $23,750) all achieving All-Time Highs.

Collectors seized the opportunity to acquire 2023 Burgundy barrels direct from some of the region’s most coveted producers. Beyond the top barrels from Roulot and Duroche, highlights included Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers Vieilles Vignes ($62,500), Comte Armand Volnay Les Fremiets ($30,000), and a half-barrel of Clerget Clos Vougeot Cuvée Félix ($62,500). The barrel of 2023 Chateau Lafite Rothschild also made waves as the second most expensive lot in the entire auction.

“What an incredible week of fine wine and wonderful friends,” gushed Acker Chairman John Kapon. “I could not have asked for a better auction to celebrate my 53rd birthday, which was made truly special by an incredible series of dinners all week long featuring an embarrassing amount of the world’s greatest wines. It does not get any better than A Legendary Offering from an Iconic New York Collector, who is a dear friend that has had a profound impact on my wine knowledge and experience. Buyers recognized his collection accordingly with some phenomenal bidding. We still have three exciting sales left this December—one in Hong Kong and another two back in the US, featuring an incredible Chartreuse-only auction. We're also hard at work preparing for an extraordinary 2025, including the La Paulée 25th Anniversary Auction, for which we are already accepting consignments. Let’s get some work done before Christmas arrives—send us your list and be part of what promises to be another blockbuster sale!”

Acker's 2024 auction season continues with a sale in Hong Kong on Saturday, December 7, a special auction of rare Chartreuse on Saturday, December 14, and a US auction on Wednesday, December 18. Consignments are being accepted for the 2025 auction season, with weekly web auction deadlines every Friday. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
